Type I: Resources to Create Student Experiences

HEIGHTEN ANTICIPATION
What can you do to heighten students anticipation of a new experience? Think of something brief and thought provoking. Locate a set of interesting images, a curious quotation, or pose a question. Heightening Anticipation provides a POINT TO PONDER.

SOME POSSIBLE RESOURCES

BrainyQuote
Goodreads
Wikiquote
The LIFE Photo Collection
New York Public Library Digital Collection
Project Apollo Archive
Pixabay

STIMULATE INTEREST
Provide an engaging set of new information. This could be an interesting video, an online simulation, a virtual field trip, a video conference with a guest speaker, or any other resource to entice your students’ thinking.

SOME POSSIBLE RESOURCES

YouTube Education
Crash Course
TED Ed
PBS Digital Studios
Skype In The Classroom

DEEPEN UNDERSTANDING
The real MAGIC happens when students are asked to think deeply about their experiences and connect the experience to their own life. Here are some SEM:Tech Graphic Organizers to get you started.

AEIOU
CONNECT EXTEND WONDER
CSI: COLOR / SYMBOL / IMAGE

HEXAGONAL THINKING
THE BULL'S EYE

EXTEND THE EXPERIENCE
You should have some viable options for your students in place should they want to further explore the topic presented in your TYPE I Experience. Think of TYPE II Skills that students might need to learn in order to successfully pursue a line of inquiry and seek satisfaction for their own curiosity.

Use this PLANNER to develop your ideas for a SEM:Tech Type I.

Type II: Methods and Skills

TECHNOLOGY LEARNING COMMUNITY
We will be using an modified unconference model today. The questions you should consider are:
  • What are some TECH problems that you might like to solve?
  • What TECH Skills do you want to develop in you / in your students?
  • How would you like to use TECH to be productive?
Import an Image & Avoid Copyright Infringement
  1. Use a SEM:Tech Template to frame examples and non-examples for your students
  2. Click here to access the "One of These Things Is Not Like the Other" Template
  3. Use Google Images to find images that do not infringe on someone's copyright (See hint below)
  4. Select images that are both obviously and not obviously connected.
  5. Upload the images to the SEM:Tech Template

Hint:
While in Google Images, click on "Search Tools". A another menu bar will appear. Click on "Usage Rights". You will want to find an image that is labeled for reuse in some form.

Type III: Directing and Managing

TAKE THE FIRST STEP
It is time to think about how you can move students from working on a Project to completing a Type III Investigations: A process, initiated by students' curiosity, that combines inquiry and the examination of real problems with the development of creative products.

Identify 3 steps you can take to make the class "project" more like a student initiated Type III Investigation:
  1.
  2.
  3.
SEM:TECH MANAGEMENT PLANNER
Successfully conducting a Type III Project requires a great deal of planning on the part of the student and the teacher. We have developed the SEM:Tech Management Planner to help set your students up for success.
